Blog #3: NaNo ’21, Day 1

Today’s stats

Times my stupid story made me cry: at least 3 (don’t judge)

Times Writer-Bot went down on Discord: literally could not keep track of this if I tried. It’s been busy!

Remember how in my last post, I said I didn’t write at NaNoWriMo speeds? Well, I stand by that… but hey, the beginning of NaNo is exciting and it’s not a bad thing to get a little head start, even if your goals are flexible. It’s just a lot of fun when all your writer friends are active at the same time! I’ve been writing in short bursts all day.

To be honest, I’m not sure whether I’ll be keeping what I wrote today–it’s not what I was expecting to write at this point in the story–but it sort of… works. I’m not sure about it, but I’m going to explore it, because this is the way of the plantser :p

I can’t go into too much detail because, as mentioned previously, we’re very much in climax territory right now. Melody Moss and the Pale Crow is at around 45k right now and will probably wrap up in the next seven to ten thousand words. I have a pretty clear birds-eye idea of how the scenes after the one I’m working on will play out, including a denouement that gives poor Melody a chance at some well-earned rest.

But the scene I’m on right now? Totally winging it, and it’s turning out… weird. I don’t hate it, though. It’s a very character-driven scene, sandwiched between two punchy climactic action sequences. It’s still very tense, still very “character overcoming flaws they didn’t realize they had,” but it’s different and it comes at a point where the reader might be getting the literary equivalent of action movie fatigue.

A good time for a break–by which I mean a journey into what might be called this story’s underworld, fighting nightmarish visions and self-destructive character traits alike, but also cool magical place descriptions and talking to the Creator himself :O

A bit of a hitch in my process, though: I may have partially dislocated my right shoulder. If I move it wrong it’s… not a pleasant feeling, and also my right hand goes numb! I’ve tried to set it back in place, but that hasn’t gone well, so I have a chiropractor appointment the day after tomorrow. Whoops o.o; fun times!

Wordfully yours,

–Jade

(PS: the words tally on these is just the novel tally. It doesn’t include blog post words, though whether anyone else does include that in their NaNo count is up to them!)
